Shiv Nadar University, formally Shiv Nadar Institution of Eminence, is a private research university near Greater Noida in the Delhi-NCR region. It was established in 2011 through an Act of the Uttar Pradesh legislature by the Shiv Nadar Foundation, the philanthropic body created by HCL founder Shiv Nadar. On 3 August 2022 the Ministry of Education recognised it as an Institution of Eminence, making it the youngest university in India to receive that title. The university offers programmes from undergraduate to doctoral level through four schools: Engineering, Management and Entrepreneurship, Natural Sciences, and Humanities and Social Sciences, along with an Academy of Continuing Education. Its philosophy rests on multidisciplinarity and interdisciplinarity, so students can combine majors with minors across departments, and undergraduate research is encouraged through its B.Sc. and B.A. (Research) degrees. It runs 17 PhD programmes with stipends and fee waivers for doctoral scholars. Research is supported by a 63,000 sq ft research block, an on-campus Atal Incubation Centre, and specialised centres including the Centre of Excellence for Himalayan Studies, the Centre for Advanced Materials, the Centre of Excellence in Epigenetics and CITRES. The university holds patents in areas such as erosion-resistant coatings and heavy-metal detoxification, and it offers dual-degree and accelerated-master's pathways with Arizona State University in the United States. Campus life is fully residential, with biodiversity parks, culture labs, artist studios, a sports complex and more than 50 student bodies. The same foundation also runs Shiv Nadar University Chennai in Kalavakkam, a separate university that grew from the SSN educational family, reflecting the foundation's "Creative Philanthropy" approach of investing in centres of excellence in education.
